Use Almond Oil to Rid Yourself of Racoon Eyes

For skin care and other anti-aging products, friends often ask me if I prefer organic or synethic products.  I prefer what works.  While I like the idea of using natural products, sometimes there are synthetics that work better for me.

Having said that, I would like to share with you one of my favorite natural ways for treating dark circles around the eyes (aka Raccoon Eyes).  I have deep set eyes and the shadow cast below them is partly due to the crevice and partly due to hereditery.  I’ve tried thousands of products over the year.  But one of the best remedies I’ve used sucessfully is almond oil.  I use it around the skin around my eyes morning and night when the circles are particulary dark.  Of course, nothing works better than sleep.  But as a mother of two, that’s not always an option.  So almond oil is my secret weapon.

Almonds are natural moisturizers since they contain high dosage of Vitamin E.  Oil extracted from almonds is not only great for dark circles but for excessively dry skin.  Packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber, you can’t go wrong with this snack.  Unless you have a peanut allergy.

Faith Hill…flawless skin

Went to the Faith Hill concert last night with some friends.  Her skin is absolutely flawless!  So is her voice.  So much fun.  Great time with friends:)

If I had only listened to my mom…

I have two young boys who I love and adore….and at times, envy, because of their beautiful skin.  My neices and nephews, same thing.   Their skin is flawless and so youthful.  They’re also all under the age of 12.  In hindsight, I wish I would have listened to my mother on this one.  I’m fair-skinned and she always cautioned me to wear sunscreen.  Instead, I went to the beach with my friends, sizzled in the sun in hopes of getting a killer tan.  Instead, I got a painful sunburn…and now sun spots.  My sister-in-law makes sure her kids wear sunscreen everyday.  I have followed suit and am finally following my mother’s advice…on this one. :)

Pedicures and manicures

This morning I saw an article  titled “Danger at Your Local Salon” on my home page.  It referenced Health.com, which referenced the January ‘09 issue of Health magazine.  The article was written by Ginny Graves.  I hope I have now properly referenced where the information came from.  The article primarily was about making sure that the salon you use for your pedicure and manicure safely disinfects their tools.  Apparently the cost is not indicative of how safe they are.  Infections can come from the posh salons as well as the walk in’s.

The part in the article that attracted my attention the most was about the Credo blade, a razor-like device that’s used to scrape your feet.  Years ago I had this done to my feet on a regular basis.  My heels, at the time, were a little rough.  I moved to Dallas and didn’t have regular pedicures for a while.  My heels got really rough.  How rough - so rough that when I wore stockings, they were only good for wearing twice because my heels would rip them.  I went to have a pedicure and asked that she “scrape my feet”.  The lady, who I still go to, told me she couldn’t because it was against the law in Texas.  If she was caught using that blade, she could lose her license.  She went on to explain to me that having your feet scraped like that will make the roughness not only come back but make it thicker.  No wonder I had this thick rough callus around my heels.

So I proceeded to treat my heels with soaking, pumicing, and wearing the socks over my Vaselined feet.  All to no avail.  By this time, my daughter and I had started Miss Oops.  I told Jennifer I wanted us to develop a foot cream that really worked at exfoliating and moisturizing feet.  She looked at me as if I had gone completely loony and stated “Mom, there are thousands of foot creams on the market”.  To which I said, “Not like this one”.  With research and working with a cosmetic chemist, we developed Pedicure in a Bottle.  I was the guinea pig.  I tried all the initial formulas.  When I tried the one we have now, I saw and felt a difference within 6 days.  Our cosmetic chemist added lavender to the formula, not to make your feet smell good but to keep your feet from smelling bad.  Lavender is a natural odor eater.

Beware of the Credo Blade.  And make sure your salon only uses properly sterilize instruments.  I recommend reading the article “Danger at Your Local Salon” on Health.com.

Launching new Miss Oops products

Goblet Goop

I traveled to New York today for meetings with editors all day Monday, Tuesday.  We are launching three new amazing products, if I don’t say so myself.  :)  They are Air She Blows, Block Your Locks, and Goblet Goop.  I’ll give you the back story on all three within due time but first, Goblet Goop rocks!  We created this product to help with both firming and hydrating the neck and chest.  Plus, the fragrance-free product contains SPF 30.  The reason we decided to do this is because some women (such as myself) tend to foolishly neglect the neck and chest area….until we’re older staring at our Turkey Neck in the reflection of a mirror.  Hence then our new creation, Goblet Goop.  Protect the Goblet.  Ok, so this is not just a shameless promotion.  I bring this product to light for a reason.  I travel a lot.  Dehydration is a terrible by-product of this.  Yes, of course I drink plenty of fluid (red wine is a fluid, right?) in addition to the obvious choice, water.  But no matter how much water I drink, when I travel my skin still looks dehydrated.  Well I’ve been using our new product on my face and neck but also around my eyes and guess what….it rocks!  So excited to learn this!  My question for you is one, if you’ve used Goblet Goop, what do you think?  And two, what other products do you recommend for dehydration, especially when traveling?  Obviously we’re looking for products other than Miss Oops.  We’re not THAT shameless…yet.  :)  Any tips would be greatly appreciated.  Hope your Monday is amazing–Jen, aka Miss Oops

The View–JAKs

jaksThis week JAKs were on The View!  It’s been awesome!  We have received colorful comments via email (because our blog page wasn’t set up) regarding a variety of creative names to describe someone’s butt hanging out over their jeans:  The classic:  Plumber’s Crack, but also Coin Slot, Butt Cleavage, etc.  A little history on the creation of JAKs:  Occasionally we have “focus groups” to come up with new products.  One evening, a group of women gathered at my home for some pizza and wine.  Once the wine started flowing, so did the ideas.  My good friend and mother of two, Natalie D. (Natalie, hope you’re OK with me throwing your name out here) asked if we could create something to cover the unfortunate scene on our backside when some of us bend over while wearing low rise jeans.  She was bending over, picking up some clothes in her kid’s room.  She said she noticed her tank top didn’t ride up and her butt was not exposed to the world.  For a moment, Natalie said she thought, “have I lost weight??”  Then she realized some of the thread from the bottom of her tank had unraveled and wrapped around a grommet on her jeans, keeping her tank top down and butt crack covered.  From this story, we decided to create JAKs, a shirt-extender made of stretch lace that also holds in muffin tops!  The names Jaks, btw, is a combination of “jeans” and “crack,” hence:  JAKs.  My sweet 9-year old son, Jack, thinks the product is named after him.  Will he be in therapy when he gets older and realizes I was actually talking about butt crack??

Boob Tubes created as a result of an “Oops!”

btlaceBoob Tubes are one of my favorite products for several reasons:  first, they are soft, they’re not bulky or hot, and they’re great to travel with.  But the REAL reason I love this product is the story behind its creation.  We had imported thousands and thousands of yards of stretch lace for our other product, JAKs (a solution for those with Plumber’s Crack–you know who you are).  When the lace arrived, we sent it to the “cutters,” the ones who actually cut the lace into the shape of the garment.  When I went to pick up the lace, everything was great with one exception:  they cut the fabric in the wrong direction!!  The lace only stretched one way and it was cut incorrectly.  What to do with thousands and thousands of pieces of stretch lace cut in the wrong direction???  We couldn’t just scrap it–too costly.  But what to do??  This was about to become a costly “oops” for our small, but growing company.  We played around with the fabric, spoke with some of our boutique owners about what we could do.  The result:  Boob Tubes!  Our Dallas representative, Kathy Flahavin, suggested calling them Boob Tube and packaging the products in tubes, which we did in the beginning.  Check them out on the website.

First Miss Oops Blog

OK, we’re in the Miss Oops Headquarters always discussing/sharing product ideas, various “oops” moments, relationships (of course..we’re women), funny, embarrassing moments when my mom said we should share these with our girls (that’s you) through a blog.  So here it is.  The first entry.  We will put various blogs in separate categories which you can see to the left of the screen.  Please feel free to join in with comments, ideas, random or related to Miss Oops.  This is a chance for us to get to know you and you to get to know us.  Thanks for being a part of our Miss Oops Blog!

Thoughts from Terry - The Mom:
I am excited about our first blog, especially since Jen had to explain to me what a blog is.  I am 66 years old and was around when television was first available to families.  Paraphrasing an old ad, “things have come a long way baby”.   Jen and I started Miss Oops 5 years ago.  What most people would consider to be inherent problems with mother and daughter working together, was worked out years ago.  We have grown up and, for me, old together.  We know how each other works and how the other will react.  Basically it goes this way - Jen gets very excited about an idea and ready to go - I sit there and say “hmmmm, well, maybe, let’s think about this a little”.   I am sure you will hear about our differences in thoughts, age, and stage of life thru this blog.  I hope to hear from you too!
